Damien’s Head
So, I realized I left you all with a cliffhanger: Damien’s cranium is infected and mangy and his head is about to implode!… I momentarily forgot that you all *care* and want to know how he’s doing and what’s happening. So, with all apologies for leaving you in the lurch, here is the update:
- The latest CT scans and MRI show that Damien still has infection in his mastoid bone, the bones surrounding his sinuses, and his jaw.
- His doc had him on very strong oral antibiotics for a few weeks.
- That didn’t seem to be working so she sent him to the ER to get on IV antibiotics.
- The ER “saw” him but wouldn’t treat him because they said he was not “sick enough” (read> He has no insurance and isn’t 50 seconds from death).
- This pissed the doctor off immensely but she said that unfortunately, there was nothing she could do to force the hospital’s hand.
- The doc put Damien on another course of oral antibiotics which has reduced the infection but not completely gotten rid of it (which was expected because he needs IV antibiotics and possibly surgery).
- So, now we wait until 1 of 2 things happen: The Dept. of Social Services approves Damien’s application for emergency medical assistance (hah! it’s been 4 months since he applied) which would allow him to see a specialist, or Damien gets so close to fatally sick that the ER knows they’ll get sued if they turn him away.
- As of the past week or so, Damien has been feeling fairly good in a relatively speaking kind of way. We just need to keep his infection “stable” enough so that he’s able to function while we wait for some kind of help.
